You want to add volume to your entire head by misting it with either salt water or a beach spray. It's important that you hair be clean and completely towel dried from roots to ends. I recommend any of these beach sprays for the spritzing process.

Make sure you split your hair into sections so you can evenly saturate your whole head and build up the volume which will make it easier for you in step 3.
Part your hair and blow dry it completely. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT USE A BRUSH TO DO SO. Run your fingers though your hair while pointing the nozzle on your blow dryer down to avoid knots, tangles, or frizz. This will just make your beachy waves look more like a tsunami.
Use a 3/4" - 1" curling iron and wrap random sections of your hair around the barrel. The key is to hold it vertically and not use the clamp. You also want to leave the last inch or so of hair out for a more natural look. After a few seconds release the hair from the barrel and pull on the ends to loosen the waves. DO NOT RUN YOUR FINGERS THROUGH IT. People tend to make that mistake and the waves get frizzy.
This is my absolute favorite curling iron. I've read some bad reviews about it but I must say I've had it for about 3 years and haven't had any problems. The spiral on the barrel makes curls more defined and I find them to hold longer. This is the only iron I use and it works great for beachy waves and for regular curls. Best part, it's only $17. You can't beat that.
