Can You Wear White After Labor Day?

05 September 2013

Summer is basically over and fall weather is just around the corner. Perfectly fine with me! I love the clothing options for fall. So while you start to pack up your shorts and bikinis and hang your sweaters and jackets in your closet, leave your white denim out. Yes, you heard correctly, don't pack your white denim away.

Tis' true fashionistas. White is in year round. According to a Time.com article from September 8, 2009 titled Why We Can’t Wear White After Labor Day, beginning in the early 20th century, white clothing was a symbol of “well-to-do” Americans. It was a status symbol for those who were able to change their clothes by season, white during the summer and darker colors in the winter. It wasn’t proper etiquette to wear white after Labor Day, specifically any clothing below the waist.

Regardless of how the "rule" came to be, there were always plenty of people willing to buck the trend. Coco Chanel famously wore white in all seasons, and I don't think we could accuse Coco Chanel of not knowing what she was doing, fashion-wise.

After Emily Post officially gave whites the OK after Labor Day, there's no longer a reason to hold back. Her 2004 manners bible, Emily Post's Etiquette, 17th Edition, rewrote the laws of fashion. There is no longer a reason to pack your white away. Instead, seamlessly transition from summer to fall with an unexpected snowy biker jacket or a pair of ivory leather pumps.

What brought on this educational post? I started another semester of grad school yesterday (impressed huh?) and me being the fashion-loving student I am had to have a fabulous outfit for the first day.

I went with a vibrant tie-dye top from Old Navy and white skinny jeans from Kohl's (to accentuate my tan). I accessorized with a chunky ring from Lia Sophia, CZ studs from Payless ($5.99!), and a braided pair of flip flops from Forever 21.

So as I walk out of my room my sister begins to joke about how "Miss Fashionista" is wearing white after Labor Day, a big fashion no-no. So thank you little sister for your inspirational ridicule. Perhaps she should read this post. Nonetheless, I hope you learned something from this post and wear your white proudly into the fall season.
