Tomboy Chic: How to Stay Rep Your Favorite Sports Team in Style

13 August 2014

When most people see me, their first impression is usually that I'm a total girly girl. And they are so right. I love dressing up, getting my nails done, wearing makeup, smelling nice, and strutting around in my six inch heels. But I'm also a huge sports fan. Most people are a bit shocked when I chime in on a sports conversation because well, not to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty knowledgeable about the sports world. I love to just relax on the weekends on the couch in front of the TV with a good game on.

Combining both of my passions though? Impossible one might think. Ah ha! That is where you're wrong. You don't have to sacrifice your style to show support for your favorite team. In fact, a lot of teams are joining forces with designers and celebrities to create more feminine clothing to appeal to female fans. That stuff can get pricey though. And when that team's season is over, most people just stick it in the back of their closet to sit until the following year.

Well, here are some tips about how to style your current wardrobe to rep your favorite team and look fabulous doing it! (a.k.a. saving money on those expensive female sports clothing line)

I'm focusing on the Pittsburgh Pirates because I'm a HUGE Pittsburgh fan. (Go Pirates! Go Steelers! Go Penguins!) When Fanatics contacted me about doing a post to showcase my personal style incorporating my favorite baseball team, I jumped at the opportunity. I'm always helping my friends and family pick out outfits when they're going to games, but still want to look cute. I mean, let's face it, a frumpy jersey and jeans isn't exactly the most stylish thing you can wear, especially if fashion is important to you. I'm a firm believer that when you look good, you feel good and exude more confidence.
New Era Pittsburgh Pirates Wool Classic 59FIFTY Fitted Hat - BlackNo game day outfit is complete without your favorite team baseball hat.So for my outfit I created, the focal piece is the traditional Pittsburgh Pirate fitted baseball hat. A bit old school, but for this outfit, I'd actually make sure my hair was pin straight and wear the hat backwards to add some edginess. Sticking to the team's colors, I always chose one color to be the standout of the ensemble and stick to ONE article of clothing in that color. In this case, since the cap is black and the P is yellow, to add some color I went for a yellow blouse. This will differ for everyone's taste and style, but for me, I personally wouldn't wear all black because that's a bit boring for my taste and opting for yellow bottoms instead just wouldn't flatter me. Be aware of what works for your body type and what doesn't.

The pleather shorts from H&M are hot. They're feminine and badass at the same time. Depending on the weather, I'd also go for black skinny jeans with a metallic shine (super trendy) to give the illusion of leather. (I personally don't find leather pants to be comfortable.) The perforated peep-toe booties are adorable and just work with this look. Shoes are always the last thing I chose because they can make or break a look depending on the style you're doing for. For example, tall boots with this outfit is just too much and sneakers or flats would take away from the edginess I'm trying to go for. When in doubt, you can't go wrong with booties, peep toe for warm weather and closed toe for the cold.

On a personal note (and Fanatics did not ask me to mention this), Fanatics is my go-to website for my sports clothing and accessories. When one of my teams comes out with a hot design for the new season, it is usually sold out within seconds on the official website and I have to wait for another shipment. Fanatics always has what I'm looking for and then some! For the men in my family, this is where I do all my Christmas shopping! They have a huge variety of apparel, accessories, and memorabilia for ALL teams and ALL sports. I'm a Fanatic for Fanatics!
